Oh, All That Blocking
For those of you who do not know already, blocking is the movement of characters and cameras in any given scene. So when I say I'm "Blocking", I'm figuring out where everything goes.
I have my own little system that I've developed from the hollywood camerawork series, if you're interested in filmmaking and haven't checked them out, I really would encourage it. www.hollywoodcamerawork.us
Now with that out of the way, let me just give you a little legend for the rest of this.
The little V's with the dots behind them represent cameras.
If the two of them are connected by a line that means it's a dolly shot and each of those are stops.
If there is an L next to it, that means I'm getting a locked down version of it as well.
I'm not actually shooting with 18 cameras at once, lighting setups will change and the 1 camera will be moved to all these locations.
The little O's represent people. The line in front is where they are facing.
1 line in front represents a boy, 2 lines represent a girl.
That is all. The rest you should be able to understand or else...well, I don't know what else. I'd be very dissapointed. I still have 2 more scenes to block out, but here's what I've got so far.
My lovely pre-production notebook.

I Can't draw, but that's why I make movies and not cartoons, right?

And there you have it. If you understand what each diagram means, you've already gotten a sense of what the film will be like! Congratulations! Some of these scenes are storyboarded, rather than blocked out because they're either montages or more of an action sequence than a scene in which people are conversing or going after a calculator bandit.
Anyways, as you can see a lot of work goes into any film before we even think about shooting and contrary to popular belief, things are getting done. Tommorow I'll post up possibly the rest of the blocking diagrams as well as pictures of all of our locations. The next step after that will be redoing each of these blocking diagrams in illustrator to make it much neater and readable by more people than just myself. Hopefully when that's done that will go up as well.
Things are getting exciting though, looks like we may even begin shooting next week or the weekend after that. Fun fun!
